Here in the Northern Hemisphere, the winter solstice marks the official start of winter, as well as the shortest day of the year.

Although it can feel like a dark and dreary time, there’s still plenty of natural beauty to be found outdoors, as well as ample opportunities for creating your own warmth, light, and magic inside.

Here are five of our favorite ways to celebrate the winter solstice:

1. Make Pomanders

A pomander is a simple, traditional holiday decoration created by studding a small orange or clementine with whole cloves. The orange symbolizes the return of the sun, making it a perfect project for a winter solstice celebration. The finished pomanders smell lovely and can be displayed in a bowl or hung as ornaments. As a bonus, this is a great fine motor skill activity for little fingers!

2. Take a Winter Nature Walk

While this can seem like a quiet time of year outside, there is still plenty to discover outdoors! Take advantage of snowy or muddy ground to search for animal tracks, guided by the Tracking Bingo activity featured in the Wonderkin Animal Tracks Box.

3. Bake “Sun Bread”

One of our favorite winter solstice traditions is reading Elisa Kleven’s charming story, Sun Bread, about a baker who misses the sun in wintertime and decides to bake warm, golden “sun bread” to bring light and joy back to her community. The book includes a recipe so that you can bake your own delicious loaf of sun bread.

4. Decorate For The Birds

Surviving a long, cold winter can be hard for wildlife. As food sources dwindle, putting out supplemental feeders is a great way to support your neighborhood birds. Try decorating a tree with birdseed ornaments, and then watch to see who comes to visit. Not sure where to begin? The Wonderkin Winter Wildlife Box includes everything you need to make your own pinecone bird feeder!

5. Engage in Some Astronomy Exploration

Dig in to the science behind the solstice with some astronomy study. The Wonderkin Astronomy Box comes jam-packed with everything you need to start your exploration. You’ll learn about the earth’s rotation, create your own constellation viewer, and harness the power of the sun to create beautiful nature art with your own Sunprint Kit.
